Matahiwi Marae

Matahiwi Marae
On the 22 of June the year eights traveled by bus to went to Matahiwi Marae to learn about maori culture.

We did a powhiri and Clive school welcomed us onto the Marae.  Matua Unahi spoke first in moari and then in English.  Then a boy spoke from Clive school to us in moari and once he had spoke they sung a couple of songs.  Jaevarn said a few words then we sung some songs aswell  After the powhiri we went into the wharekai and we had a cookie and some water.  Then we split into three groups, my group was with my class and room 15.  First my group lernt about the history of Whaea Edwards family.  Secondly we went into the wharenui and Matua Unahi told us about about Kahungunu and his relations.  On the ceiling there were panels and they represented the local rivers Ngaruroro, Tutaekuri and the Tukituki river.  Thirdly  we went to the Marae atea and saw Matua Mulligan and he spoke about what the statues mean and the history on the statues.  I really enjoyed the experience.
